Who Am I, Really? 10/11/26

Ephesians 2:10

I. Mistaken identity

a. A party question: ”So, what do you do?”

b. A lot of our struggle isn't really about our circumstances. It's that we don't know who we are underneath them.

c. When your identity is built on performance, appearance, or approval, it will always feel shaky.

d. Never ever base your identity on anything you can lose.

II. Foundations

a. Matthew 7:24-27 - rock or sand...?

b. Identity gets built by default, usually on one of four foundations.

c. Achievement: "I am what I accomplish." This is the résumé self.

d. Appearance: "I am how I look."

e. Approval: "I am what you think of me."

f. The algorithm: "I am my numbers.”

g. Every one of them is earned, and so every one of them can be lost.

h. The apostle Paul knew this: Philippians 3:5-14 he lists his résumé.

i. One word that describes Paul’s position...settled...

III. Loved, not earned...

a. Scripture builds identity not from what you've earned, but from what you've been given.

b. Imaged — Genesis 1:27. "So God created mankind in his own image

c. Known — Psalm 139:13–14. "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb...”

d. Crafted — Ephesians 2:10. "For we are God's handiwork...”

e. You don't work toward your worth. You work from it.

f. Renewed — 2 Corinthians 5:17. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!”

IV. Settle it for yourself...

a. Notice the flinch. Where your identity is actually living, as opposed to where you say it lives.

b. Receive before you achieve. Start the day by receiving something you didn't earn. Psalm 139:13–14

c. Talk back to the lie. "I was known before I produced anything."

d. Let people who know you remind you. Isolation feeds false identity.

e. Most of our struggle isn't really about our circumstances. It's that we don't know who we are underneath them.

f. Settle it for yourself...once and for all!
