I Thought It Was Just ME!: The Ache of Loneliness

 

Genesis 2:18

 

I. What’s going on?

a. Why would 21st century people feel more lonely than ever before?

b. We are more digitally "connected" than any generation before us.

c. Facebook friends and Instagram friends...

d. Real community was never meant to be optional.

e. Loneliness has grown as digital connection has grown.

f. Digital connection isn't the same as being known.

g. The vulnerability barrier: very often we hide.

 

II. A connection problem

a. We've never had more ways to be "in touch" with more people.

b. It’s not a technology problem, it's a connection problem.

c. We've confused being near people with being truly known.

d. Being near or being connected are not the same thing.

e. Genesis 2:18? 18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

f. What was true of Adam in the beginning is still true.

g. You and I are built to connect face to face, life to life, heart to heart.

h. So if we're built for this, why are we so bad at it right now?

i. The vulnerability barrier: The moment we need people is when we're

least willing to reach out.

j. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 “Two are better than one...”

k. What real community actually looks like. Acts 2:42-47

l. Most of us have optimized our lives for efficiency and privacy in ways

that quietly starve us of community.

m. Hebrews 10:24-25 “...spur one another on toward love and good

deeds...”

n. Stop waiting to be reached out to, and become the one who reaches.

o. Somebody has to break that cycle, and it might as well be you, today.
