2 Corinthians 9:6-8

I. The money talk

a. Ttithing, trust, and worshiping God with what's in your wallet...

b. What happens in your soul when you open your hand instead of closing your fist.

c. 4 in 10 practicing Christians say they actually tithe

d. Most tithing conversations turn into a debate about percentages.

e. Scripture asks whether money is our god or whether we've put it in its place.

II. Familiar passages on money

a. Genesis 14:17

b. Hebrews 7:1-3

c. Malachi 3:8-10

d. Matthew 6:19-21

e. 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

f. 1 Corinthians 16:2

g. Luke 21:1-4

h. Proverbs 3:9-10

III. The tension

a. Some say tithing is no longer required

b. Others say it’s still the baseline

c. Jesus affirmed tithing without correcting it. (Matt 23:23)

d. First — where the tithe actually comes from - Genesis 14

e. Both sides of the argument...

f. First, the case that it's not required...

g. Every believer is now a priest; there's no Levite class.

h. When the New Testament actually talks about giving, it never names a percentage.

i. Paul tells the Corinthians to give "as you may prosper" — proportional.

j. Not equal giving but equal sacrifice.

k. Secondly, there’s the case that it's still the baseline: (Matthew 23:23).

l. Where I land: no verse binds a New Testament believer to exactly ten percent.

m. But I also don't think "we're not required to" was ever meant to become our finish line.

n. Third — what isn't actually up for debate.

o. Giving was never primarily about funding a budget.

p. It was about what happens to you when you open your hand.

q. Jesus says it plainly: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

r. Paul doesn't say give sacrificially so much as give cheerfully.

s. Fourth — a way forward, wherever you're starting from.

t. Start with an honest number: calculate your current percentage.

u. If you're already at or past ten percent — you’re not finished.
